The Silk Betrayal By Daniel Ausema
A political fantasy set in an India-flavoured culture, following a varied cast of characters as they live through “interesting times”
What it’s about
We follow Pavresh the “arcist mage” and an eclectic mix of other characters as they attempt to end the injustices caused by their rigidly organised society. We see them come together around a charismatic leader, we see them take their chance, and as you have probably guessed by the title, we see them betrayed.
This is the first book in Daniel Ausema’s Arcist Chronicles, and while it does have a satisfying ending, there is obviously unresolved drama as a result.
Why you should read it
If you’re looking for something different, this setting is unusual and beautifully drawn, and it comes with a varied cast of compelling characters. Through their eyes, we see the danger and weakness of authoritarianism, along with the vast courage required to oppose it.
However, we also see a complex picture, where rigid social structure provides security and a clear sense of identity, while at the same time enabling abuse and injustice. This story is full of complex questions, and it isn’t afraid to leave us to find our own answers as we follow Pavresh on his twisting moral journey.
You might not like it if…
This is a complex political story and it takes a few chapters to heat up, so if you want to be hurled head first into the action on page one, or you came for blow-by-blow battles and set-piece action scenes, it might not be for you.
